Free Junior membership for Liverpool residents

As part of our Active Lifestyles youth offer, our free Junior membership is available to local children and young people aged 8 to17.

We want to encourage our local children and young people to live active lifestyles, support community wellbeing and provide access to safe, inclusive facilities. 

This is why we have introduced a free membership for gym and swim sessions across selected centres at in term time and over the school holidays.

How to sign up

You can join online and select 'Active Lifestyles Youth Offer' as the membership type. You can also join in person at any centre. You will receive a membership card which you must bring to every visit.

Once signed up, you must book an induction to use the gym - you can swim straight away during our public swim sessions.

Free membership FAQs

The under 18s free membership (Active Lifestyles Youth Offer) gives eligible young people free access to swimming and gym use at selected Lifestyles centres during certain times. This membership runs alongside our current junior membership, Activ8.

The free membership can only be used at council run Lifestyles centres and excludes Walton Sports Centre and Cardinal Heenan.

The free membership is available to young people aged under 18 who live in Liverpool. Registration is required before accessing the offer.

Nothing to register online. On your first visit, you may be asked to provide:

  • proof of age (ID).
  • proof of address to confirm Liverpool residency.
  • parent or guardian details where required for emergency details.

Yes - a parent or guardian will need to complete the registration process, provide consent, and supply any relevant medical information and emergency contact details.

The free under 18s membership is available until a member's 18th birthday. Once they turn 18, their eligibility for the scheme will end and they will need to move onto an alternative membership option if they wish to continue using the facilities.

The membership provides:

  • free access to public swimming sessions.
  • free gym access during selected times.

Under 18s can access Lifestyle gyms:

Term time

  • Monday to Friday: 3pm to 6pm
  • Weekends: All day

School holidays

  • Monday to Friday:9am to 6pm
  • Weekends: All day

The free membership allows for the use of pools during all public and family swim times. Check times on our centre pages.

Yes, you need to bring your membership card to every visit. If you lose it, replacements cost £3.

You can access our pools during public and family swim times straight away. But you must book a gym induction before you can use the gym. You can book this online or at a centre.

Any members that have used the gym on their Activ8 membership in the last 12 months, can have their induction transferred across.

Yes. If the free access times are not suitable, you can still take out an Activ8 membership. Prices start from £12.50 per month, with a concessionary rate of £6.30 per month available for eligible customers, including those receiving free school meals. Memberships can be purchased at any Lifestyles centre.

Activ8 provides additional access and flexibility beyond the free under 18s offer and may be more suitable if you wish to access facilities outside the designated free access times. Please see our junior memberships for more information.

Yes. A gym induction is required before accessing gym facilities. Staff will provide guidance on the safe use of equipment. These can be booked online or at a centre.

Children and young people aged 13 and under must always be accompanied in the gym by a responsible adult.

  • The minimum height restriction to use gym equipment is 4ft 7in (140cm).
  • Ages 7-13 can use all cardio equipment.
  • Ages 13-17 can use all cardio and resistance equipment.

Young people can use the pools during all public and family swim times. Check times on our centre pages. If attending with younger children, our pool ratios apply:

  • Children under the age of 4 years should be accompanied by an adult on a 1 to 1 basis.
  • Children aged between 4 and 7 should be accompanied on a maximum 2 children to 1 adult basis.

Yes - free swimming for children aged under 8 years old remains available.

Yes, provided they are also registered members and meet the eligibility requirements.

No. Memberships are for the named individual only and cannot be shared.

All members are expected to behave respectfully towards staff, customers and facilities. We reserve the right to suspend or remove access where behaviour is unsafe, disruptive or inappropriate.
